Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)
Healing isn't always found in what we say - Sometimes it's found in what we allow ourselves to experience.
We're excited to partner with the incredible team at Harnessing Hope to enhance and expand the ways we support healing. Through Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), clients have the opportunity to step beyond the traditional therapy office and engage in an experiential approach that fosters meaningful connection, supports real-time nervous system regulation, and creates lasting opportunities for self-awareness, emotional growth, and healing.
Our approach is rooted in evidence-based care, thoughtfully integrating the principles of EMDR and other pertinent therapy modalities to help clients process experiences, strengthen emotional regulation, and deepen their connection with themselves - both in and beyond the arena.
FAQs
What Is Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
1
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an experiential, trauma-informed approach to therapy that combines evidence-based mental health treatment with intentional interactions alongside horses. Rather than focusing on horseback riding or horsemanship, EAP uses thoughtfully guided experiences to increase self-awareness, strengthen emotional regulation, and support lasting psychological healing.
At Crescent, our work is guided by an EMDR-Informed approach in collaboration with our partners at Harnessing Hope. When clinically appropriate, we thoughtfully integrate EMDR principles into the therapeutic process to support nervous system regulation, help clients process difficult experiences, and strengthen adaptive beliefs through meaningful, present-moment experiences.
Do I need horse experience?
2
No prior horse or riding experience is required. Equine-assisted psychotherapy is not about learning to ride - it's about using thoughtfully guided interactions with horses to support your therapeutic goals.
Many clients begin feeling unsure or even nervous around horses, and that's completely okay. Your comfort and safety are always our priority. We'll move at a pace that feels right for you, and there is never any pressure to do more than you're ready for.
What Can I expect Before, During, and after a session?
3
Before: The first step is to contact Crescent Counseling & Consulting to schedule an intake appointment. A separate intake session in our office is required before beginning equine-assisted psychotherapy at Harnessing Hope. This appointment allows us to get to know you, discuss your history and treatment goals, determine whether equine-assisted psychotherapy is the right fit for your needs, review intake paperwork, complete any necessary consent forms, and answer any questions you may have about the process.
During: Every EAP experience is individualized. Depending on your treatment plan, sessions may take place at Harnessing Hope, in Crescent Counseling & Consulting's private office, or—most often—a combination of both.
When meeting at the arena, you'll be welcomed by your therapist and trained equine co-facilitator. You'll meet your horse—or horses—in the designated loading area, where you'll have an opportunity to become acquainted, settle into the environment, and review your goals and intentions for the session with your treatment team before entering the arena. Harnessing Hope provides all necessary equipment for your session, so there's no need to bring anything other than yourself and comfortable clothing.
Activities are thoughtfully selected based on your treatment goals. Your therapist may process experiences with you in real time or allow the experience to unfold naturally, making observations that you'll explore together afterward. There is no "right" way to participate—each session is designed to meet you where you are.
After: Healing doesn't end when the session is over. Following your arena experience, you'll have the opportunity to reflect on what emerged during the session and begin integrating those insights into your everyday life.
Do you Only Offer Individual Equine-Assisted Therapy sessions?
4
Nope! While individual Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy is our most popular service, we also offer customized experiences to meet a variety of needs.
We can also partner with you to create retreats, enrichment/team-building experiences, and other customized programs. Each experience is thoughtfully designed with a mental health and wellness focus, incorporating therapeutic goals, emotional growth, and meaningful experiential learning.
If you have an idea in mind, we'd love to connect and explore how we can create a program that best fits your group's needs.
